Here is the most important of the drunk driving laws: Don’t do it. Short and sweet, simple to comprehend, yet many people commit this irresponsible act every day. They take the lives of others into their hands every time they take to the road after a 4-martini lunch or a night on the town. I get angry when I hear about a young pedestrian who got killed by a drunk driver who missed a stop sign. I’m also deeply disappointed in the people who get drunk and drive. I wish they’d think more about what they’re doing. I wish they’d care. They have to know it’s against the law, but apparently they aren’t too concerned about that. You’d think that community response would have some effect on them, but I guess not, because they just keep repeating the behavior. Most offenders have already done it three times before they finally get caught. I just think of the families, including mine, that have to live with the consequences of the havoc these drunk drivers cause, including
• Permanent injury to themselves
• Life-altering physical damage to others
• Death of an innocent bystander
• Property damage
My family lost a son, a brother, and a friend many years ago to the actions of a teenager who was driving home from a party after drinking too much beer. She ran a red light, jumped a curb at high speed, and crashed into our house. My brother was in the living room watching TV at the time and the entire corner of the house just crashed in on him, basically squeezing the life out of him. To say we were devastated is not even close to how we felt. That’s why underage drunk driving is a pet peeve of mine now, as an adult. I cannot condone the actions of people who supply alcohol to teens. Some of the people who do so are parents, older siblings, and legal aged friends. It just blows my mind that they think it’s somehow amusing to see teenagers behaving like idiots because they’re drunk.
