Effective Solutions for Drunk Driving

The problem with drunk driving is still on the increase in many states and doesn’t seem to be getting better. We need to find solutionsfor drunk driving, but without the cooperation of the courts and the drivers themselves little will be accomplished.

Teenagers are an Added Risk

As if drunk driving is not a big enough problem, we have the additional problem with drunk driving teenagers on the roads. Aside from the fact teens are not old enough to drink, we have the fact they also have limited driving experience. The combination of these two factors adds a great deal of danger, one that in all probability will hurt or even kill someone. While the laws are designed to protect others on the road, sometimes there is not enough enforcement to make those laws work for everyone.

More Programs are Necessary

While there are drunk driving programs in every state, they do not effectively solve the problem. One of the reasons this may happen is because the states do not enforce the laws on drunk driving as well as they should. Some of the things that occur to prevent effective enforcement of drunk driving laws include the following:
  • Lack of enforcement of subsequent convictions
  • Penalties that do not fit the crime (in other words leniency in sentencing when there is serious injury or death involved)
  • Individuals still having their license after several convictions of DUI or DWI
  • Failure to follow up on requirements for substance abuse programs
  • Failure of the courts to recognize many problem drivers until it is too late

Hiring an Attorney

If you have to attend court because of a DUI or DWI you may wish to hire a drunk driving attorney. While you certainly don’t have to have an attorney, it is in your best interest to have one. Having an attorney can make the difference between losing your license and being committed to a treatment program. It can also determine whether or not you will be approved for a work license so you can drive back and forth to work. An attorney is in a better position to plead your case and perhaps get you off on a lighter sentence, especially if this is your first conviction. You should never attempt to represent yourself on a charge as serious as drunk driving.

It’s important to find solutions for drunk driving, especially for drunk driving teenagers. The problem has become steadily increasing every year, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. In many states alcohol is responsible for over half the serious and fatal accidents, and even with drunk driving programs the problem persists. By the time many people admit they have a problem they are already in court facing the possibility of losing their licenses and depending on a drunk driving attorney to help them get a lighter sentence.
